The Role of People in the Age of Parking Automation

Over the years, traditional parking management strategies have shifted, with technology playing a more prevalent role in managing parking operations. However, that does not mean that the everyday tasks performed by people are entirely extinct. Instead, they are supported by intelligent technologies that make their functions more efficient, intuitive, and easy.
People and technology go hand in hand. Below are three types of technologies that support parking management, allowing facility and property managers to allocate resources only where they are needed most.
1. Remote Customer Service and Live Central Monitoring
Remote customer service representatives (CSR) allow property managers to manage growing parking demands. Remote CSRs can be used to replace or support onsite parking attendants' duties when on break, overnight or during peak hours.
Remote technology used by CSRs can also be used to monitor performance alerts and alarms of parking devices on site. Utilizing a 24/7 connection, technical and maintenance support is deployed immediately, whether with backend troubleshooting or technician dispatch.
Remote monitoring allows parking operations to function more efficiently. However, it is not possible without the support of remote CSRs.
2. Business Intelligence Platforms
Business intelligence, data, and analytics are often associated with artificial intelligence systems that work for you. However, although they provide a wealth of insights, predictions and recommendations on your behalf, these self-management tools also allow you to control your program, pinpoint what is and what isn’t working within your facility, and help you deploy the necessary resources to maximize results.
3. Intuitive Hardware & Software Solutions
The beauty of parking technology is that it is continually evolving. There is now a slew of hardware and software solutions that help streamline operations and support people-driven processes. Smart and connected gated and meter technologies, license plate recognition, parking guidance systems, and EV charging stations provide facility managers unlimited access to onsite activities, making the parking experience that much easier.
But make no mistake—parking processes such as technical maintenance and enforcement are still heavily driven by people. Thanks to solutions such as cloud-based enforcement software, in-field errors are significantly reduced, helping to minimize backend administration.
People used to fuel technology; now, it's the other way around. But make no mistake, both are still a key component to any successful parking operation. Embracing parking automation will let technology manage for you, increasing operational efficiencies and decreasing downtimes.
